Hidden Details

This body of work emerged from over 2,500 miles of walks through the local woodlands behind our house over the past seven years, often retracing the same familiar trail. It was created for North East Open Sudios (NEOS), September 2026.

It reflects a slow-growing, evolving relationship with place, memory, and time.

Through these repeated journeys, I’ve witnessed how the same stretch of woodland can shift in mood and meaning. Shaped by things such as the seasons, the light, or simply the state of my own thoughts on a given day.

The work draws on this layered experience, touching on themes of woodland folklore, the passage of time, and the quiet magic found in small, often overlooked details, such as fallen Scots pine needles.

These are things I’ve photographed, carved in wood, and printed onto handmade paper.

Repetition plays a central role. Hand-carved woodblock patterns are used not only as a compositional device, but as a way to slow down. A quiet activism against the speed and noise of modern life.

There is a quiet rhythm in the making of this work, one that feels meditative, even spiritual. I invite the viewer into that same space of attention and stillness: to pause, notice, and spend time with the subtle shifts in texture, tone, and form.
